Hey there. I just got my stuff for a welder and am starting to play with steel. My first thing I will do after fooling around a bit will be a headache rack. Look at my renders and tell me what you think!
I thought it would be cool to have the light bars as reverse lights and keep them out of the way. Then I could flip them up on a bracket and have them light the path in front of me for the times that I need it. I never saw it done, but it seems good in theory. Thoughts?

What's a headache rack? Sits on the roof?

Between the cab and the bed of a pickup. It is used to keep long items from resting on the top of the bed. It is also used to make sure nothing from the bed breaks the rear window in the cab of a pickup.

Very cool. I've been welding for a while - but never have used CAD. Headache rack looks good. I'd incorporate some tie down points. here's a write up I did of one of my bigger welding projects- http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/so-i-just-stum…

Looks great. That'll look awesome in the flesh. Baja Rack made something similar with an actuator and their roof racks. If you make these to sell, I think it'll go like hotcakes.

Making the lights so they can rotate on the top bar will complicate the wiring and construction. It feels like one of those things that you haven't seen done for a reason.
Otherwise, it looks pretty good. I'd add big tie-down spots where the front stakebed holes would be on the truck, and a steel mesh across the whole thing on the very front face.
The bars look cool and make good tie-down points but you know Murphy's Law says you'll be loading something one day and the rear window will get broken through one of the gaps or that big hole in-line with the rear view mirror.

Ah ha! My only point would be to make sure any pivot or bracket is ROCK SOLID when fixed in forwards facing position. Any wobble will make using them as driving lamps absolutely horrible

Ok, semi-professional opinion; what gauge should I use? I was going to use 1.5 by 3 inch box and those vertical supports were going to be inch by inch box, don't really know what gauge, but I want to keep it rigid, and relatively light. Thoughts?

I'd probably do it in 1/8" - I believe that translates to 11 or 10 gauge.

One thing you might want to think about is how bright these lights are going to be.
It would be a bit annoying to everyone around you for you to throw it in reverse and blind everyone with big spots, if you want them for driving also.
